ARTIST STATEMENT
Abstract Art breaks away from representational art and realism. It is about exploring the energy of the shapes, lines, and colors, while exploring their fluid movements.
My paintings are inspired by the early 1950’s and ‘60’s, and the New York School of abstract expressionists, including Robert Motherwell and Jackson Pollock. I was moved by the loose lines in Motherwell’s work and the movement in Pollock’s work, which inspired me to try and combine the two into my paintings.
My work combines of two different approaches including fluid painting and color-field painting. In my fluid paintings, my paintings take their own shape, as I don’t have much control over the way the paint wants to go, making my paintings “free”. I control what color and how much paint but the art of each piece is in how the paint flows. In my color-field paintings, I have full control over the paint as I work with multiple layers and incorporating expressionistic brush work to create different lines, forms and shapes.
